Sydney Festival - Who To See

Shabazz Palaces - A boundary-pushing showcase helmed by hip-hop elder Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (Digable Planets), Shabazz Palaces bring their intelligent and compelling brand of hip-hop to our shores. Their 2011 release "Black Up" has received great reviews.

Andrew Weatherall - Renowned knob-twiddler for Primal Scream and Fuck Buttons, and remixer of countless others, Andrew Weatherall is the seminal DJ of the last 20 years of dance music.

Asa & Fefe - Nigerian-French artists Asa and Fefe come to Sydney for the first time. The sublime Asa has drawn comparisons to Erykah Badu with her smoke and honey voice and nod to 60s soul and Afro-beats. Hip-hop artist Fefe presents an explosive live show fusing elements of funk, soul, blues, rock and the odd ballad.

Mad Racket With Peven EverettUnderground phenomenon and prominent figure in Chicago's house and R&B scenes, Peven Everett collaborated with Roy Davis Jr on the UK garage hit Gabriel before recording one of the most loved deep house records of all time, I Can't Believe I Loved Her.

DJ Koze & Prins Thomas -  In his first visit to Australian shores, DJ Koze brings his electrifying, heart-warming, minimal house to the dance floor, joined in an amazing double bill by Prins Thomas (Norway).

The Pedrito Martinez Group & Watussi - With his Peruvian, Venezuelan and Cuban bandmates, Pedrito brings Sydney a one-night-only Afro-Cuban party. Watussi's rocking roots bass lines and blustering horn section will have you howling for more.

The Stepkids - The Stepkids are the newest signing to Stones Throw Records, home to groundbreaking artists like Madlib and J Dilla. Their stunning debut album is a soul-tinged pyschedelic masterpiece that has captured the hearts of critics.

PJ Harvey - Harvey's latest album Let England Shake is the fastest selling and most critically acclaimed album of her career and has just been awarded the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, making her the only artist to receive this award twice.

Mike Patton - Turn up the summer heat as one of rock music's most admired and distinctive voices returns to Australia in the guise of an Italian pop crooner. Mike Patton, the charismatic front-man of Faith No More, gives dramatic new life to popular and folk tunes of the 1950s and 60s.

See below for both the song made and the song sampled from:

Maya Jane Coles

Consistency is key... and this fringey Londonite has been exactly that with her releases over the last few years. She may only be 23 years old, but she started her DJ/Producer role in her mid teens, so has game experience beyond her years. Check out some of her releases below, they're just delightful:

Top Album: SBTRKT - SBTRKT

SBTRKT has hit the mark with his 2011 self-titled debut album, a follow up to 2010's EP Step In Shadows. With this album, he has been thrown into the same cauldron as James Blake and Jamie Woon, but make note - he definitely has his differences. Rather then Blake's emotional-amnesia sound, SBTRKT's extremely tight production and deeper sound exploration make for purposeful tracks with a clear direction.

The dubstep/grime/electropop beats in this album are perfectly matched with feature vocalists Sampha (very James Blakey), Jessie Ware, Roses Gabor and Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano - for the raging single Wildfire.

New Release: Bjork - Crystalline

Always one to push the boundaries of cutting edgery, Bjork's seventh studio album is no different. Biophilia has been partly recorded on the ipad and will be released in the form of a series of apps. It will be the first "app album".

The first single is Crystalline. Her powerful vocals swirl over raw electronics, reminiscent of the Bjork of yonder. The song emotionally meanders along, the constant presence of a creepy xylophone compliments the scouring and scraping beat. It's final 40 seconds are engulfed by chaotic DnB, a hectic climax to great first single.

Get ready for plenty of remixes.

And no, you're not seeing double. The doppelganger drummers are myself and Clive Deamer. Clive has long been one of my favourite drummers and so I was really excited when he agreed to perform with us. Hope you like what we've all done.

Philip x"

Escobar's new single is called "Nasty" and is produced by Salaam Remi. It's jam packed with classic Nas word-smithery... there isn't even room for a chorus.

Top Track: Greg Paulus - Nightime (Crazy P Remix)

Electronic maestros Crazy P (formerly Crazy Penis) have been in the game since the early 90s. Like their name, their sounds has also evolved through a whirlwind of down tempo, deep house and disco.

One of their latest treats is a remix of Greg Paulus' - Nightime. This tune starts with a drum loop that instantly reminds of the beat in The Roots' - Thought @ Work. And just like in Thought @ Work, the beat in this Crazy P remix glistens. The sunrise synths and slightly Leonard Coenish vocals really give the track a break-of-dawn feeling. And seeing is that this is a remix of a song titled "Nightime", this is very fitting indeed.

Listen below:

greg paulus-nightime crazy p remix by Alex LeCCa

You can safely say we'll continue to witness the Crazy P sound progression as time marches on. I just hope we see a few more funny penis-related monikers as well. I might suggest Insane Rod Posse or maybe Mental Schtyfen?
